Every object, even an apple, is essentially a colorless object
Everything we see essentially has no color but our brains together with our eyes interpret light being scattered into various wave lengths as colors.
Our brains exist in a state of “Controlled Hallucination" and color is one of those hallucinations.
An example of this controlled hallucination is colours: “we already know that colours don’t exist in nature, but evolution has made us interpret the world in colour because it was more useful for our survival.“ Anil Seth - Source
So perceiving the red of an apple is a result our need to see nutritious food or ripe fruits to increase our chances to survive. This again is sourced in evolution and the fact that we evolved many skills which improve our survival rate.
This is also interesting when thinking about how Culture and language can affect the perception of color. Some colors are shared between many cultures (e.g. white/bright, black/dark and red) while others are either non-existent or not as important.
For example there is a special term for „dark orange“ – „Brown“. Brown is just dark orange and when using a HSL based color selector one can easy see, that brown is nothing more than a dark shade of orange. But we formed a word for it so does exist.
